Robert Sim, Landscapes

Sim’s landscapes capture the characteristically muted harmonies of the country. He incorporates the impressionist’s sense of shimmering light to draw focus on carefully chosen details while alluding to the qualities of the broad scene. Playing with focus and soft edges,  Sim paints the world as one sees it, not how it is.

The oil landscapes of Sim’s summer works reveal his ability to transform flowing pigments into graceful idyllic scenes. Views of sunlight skipping on brooks or reflecting objects along the banks, leave the viewer feeling warm. His winter landscapes use light in a similar fashion, saving the viewer from winter’s depressive capacity. It is in works such as Spring Ice, that Sim’s animated brushwork and talent for capturing spirited sunlight inspires the urbanite viewer to long for the country.
