William Pura

During my career as a visual artist and composer I have created an important body of work that has been recognized in many international venues. While most recently being based in Canada, my work has given me opportunities to exhibit throughout North America as well as in Europe. In 2006 I was an artist in residence in Passau, Germany where, besides an exhibition of my artwork, I had examples of my music performed during the opening events. I have written from time to time on various aspects of the contemporary art world and this residency also gave me a chance to discuss trends in both Germany and North America.

Other European exhibitions have taken place in Italy where, in 2008 for example, I was part of a group of artists who exhibited in Marostica and Venice.

My musical works have been performed by many fine musicians in many different venues. Most recently, on March 26, 2011 my work for solo piano, Nemesis, was given its US premiere at Carnegie Hall by pianist Sylvia Shadick-Taylor.

My extensive background in both art and music has given me many opportunities to serve on awards juries for the Canada Council and to work on various multi-media projects involving art and music. My soundtrack for the aerial dance video Aerial Artistry was featured in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Besides the work on various music awards and my arts and culture writing, I have created and hosted special arts programming for CBC radio.
